This is the root of it all: Today is crap. I don't mean my day, or your day, but the collective hours shaped by current culture and capitalism is CRAP.
Why can't I open a catalog and see gems like those above? I used to think I was a minimalist and hated the mall. If the mall sold stuff like what's in the Sears catalogs from the 1940's through early 1960's I would be one of those chumps who maxes out her credit card. Oh wait, they used Diner's Club cards and those were used for eating out- people still paid with cash or check when they went shopping! They could still afford to, usually, because minimum wage paid the bills and the country wasn't living beyond its means! But what I mean is I'd be shopping all of the time and showing off my treasures. Not much different than now except that it would be NEW things and I could buy them anywhere. I wouldn't have to attend hundreds of yard and estate sales to find a handful of goodies.
Where's the temptation?
That will solve the current recession! Make more smaller ranch style homes with stylish, quality made fixtures and furnishing the working man and woman can afford to purchase for their home that they plan to live in until they retire.
I'm going to start ordering shit from a vintage Sears catalog and see what happens (not really). But first I have to get one on ebay for a pretty sum. I need to be rich to live like a mid-century middle class gal!
